When the townsite of Northcliffe was surveyed in 1923, this forest was included and was to be divided into building blocks. The land was never utilised for this purpose but could not be officially logged due to zoning regulations. As a result this area remains relatively untouched.

This area is not fed by a nearby river resulting in soils that are sandy and acidic due to leaching of nutrients. Therefore the soil is most suitable for some of smaller species of plants and ferns unique to the South West region. The Remembrance trail gives us the opportunity to see some of the diversity of forest types which occur around Northcliffe.

In summer the Marri tree has a massed canopy of pink and white
flowers and is a favourite of the white
and red-tailed black cockatoos. Marri is the aboriginal word for beautiful. The large Marri or honkey nuts  were homes of May Gibbs' Sugglepot and Cuddlepie.

The trails starts at the Northcliffe Pioneer Cemetery were many of the Group Settlement Pioneers have been laid to rest.

Please feel free to have a look around and discover the early history of Northcliffe.
